Brophy

What is Brophy?

Brophy is an inter-district team’s event.

For many years Swimming ACT has hosted the James Brophy Memorial Inter-District Sprint Meet.  This meet brings together swimmers from all over the southern and western part of country NSW.   Districts compete for the James Brophy Memorial Shield and the Peter Love Trophy.  ACT has a very proud tradition of fighting hard to win both the Peter Love Trophy (for the overall point score) and the James Brophy Memorial Shield (for the handicap point score).

Events are 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly for both girls and boys with ages ranging from 8 and under through to 16 and over. Each team can have up to two competitors in an event. And there are relays to finish off the meet, generally with a great deal of excitement.

How are teams selected?

Each district will have their own method of selection however there are some rules that apply to who can compete and what they can swim.

Swimmers who are members of elite squads such as the AIS or National or State Squads cannot be included in a team.

Swimmers who have qualified to compete in either a 50m, 100m, or 200m Australian Age or Australian Open Championship event, at the conclusion of the current summer season  NSW State Age 13-18 Years championships (or equivalent) over distances of 50m, 100, or 200m may not compete in either an individual or team relay event in that particular stroke.

Swimmers who won a medal in their current age group at the current summer season NSW Age Championship or the NSW State Open championships (or equivalent) over distances of 50m, 100, or 200m may not compete in either an individual or team relay event in that particular stroke.

How is the ACT Team selected?

Eligible swimmers will be selected on the basis of their 50m swims recorded over the current summer season.

Selected swimmers will be notified of their selection well ahead of the meet.

Our team members compete in 50m sprint events and relays with two swimmers competing in each individual event. Every swim is important to our overall points as each one earns points (provided the swimmer is not disqualified).

Other general information

There is no swimmer levy charged for your participation in our team. Instead, you will need to pay for your pool entry ($5) and you can buy a program, if you wish.  Swimming ACT will be supplying you with a Brophy Team swim cap. All team members will be required to wear their Swimming ACT Squad polo shirt on Sunday at the meet and their ACT swim cap when in the water.  ACT polo shirts can be purchased at a cost of $30.  If you need a shirt let me know and what size is required.

As an ACT team member you are expected to be at the meet for its duration to both compete and support your fellow ACT team members. This year there will be no exceptions to this rule. Swimmers will not be able to attend another sporting activity and come to Brophy afterwards. Warm-up is at 8.30am and all swimmers are asked to ensure that they are at the pool, in the team area and ready to warm up by this time. The meet is expected to finish by 3.30 pm.

There will be a number of managers and coaches who will look after the team on the day and all team members are expected to sit in the assigned team area.

There is no seating available for parents/supporters in the area allocated to the ACT team. Parents wishing to attend are encouraged to assist with the running of the meet.  Actually, we need the help of as many parents as possible on the day.  To keep the cost of the meet down as much as possible we ask that you provide items to assist with catering. You will be contacted about catering items in due course.
